How to Smile in 3 Easy Steps

A smile is one of the most powerful tools we have for communication. It can convey happiness, warmth, and confidence. But, what if you don't know how to smile?

We've had a few patients come in who, just like many, literally did not know how to smile, so I would walk them step by step on how to smile, and every time they'd come in for progress photos, we could see the transformation of their confidence in their smile right before our eyes. These patients were for sure some of my favorite treatments to follow!!

If you're one of the many people who struggle with smiling, don't worry. Here are 3 simple steps I’ve made for you to follow, to find your smile:

Step 1: Say the word, "me" with your lips together.
The perfect word to get your lips into the ideal position for a natural smile

This may sound strange, but it's a great way to get your lips into the correct position for a natural smile. When you say "me" with your lips together, your lips naturally curl up at the corners. This is the same position your lips should be in when you smile.

Step 2: Separate your teeth slightly.

Once your lips are in the correct position, slightly separate your teeth. This will help to open your mouth and create a more genuine smile.

Step 3: Add a slight squint to your eyes.
Understand how to involve your eyes in your smile for that extra touch of warmth and happiness

A genuine smile involves the whole face, not just the mouth. To make your smile look more natural, add a slight squint to your eyes. This will bring a sense of happiness and warmth to your entire face and smile.

Practice makes perfect

The best way to learn how to smile naturally is to practice. Smile in the mirror, take those gorgeous selfies, and smile at people you meet. The more you practice, the easier it will be for you to start smiling naturally.

Additional Tips

Like anything new, it will feel awkward and weird to practice smiling. Here are tips for less awkward opportunities to practice your smile:

  • Watch a funny video on social media
  • Think of something that makes you happy
  • Watch a funny movie, show or stand-up comedy

With a little practice, you'll be smiling naturally in no time!
